2016 SMI Annual Conference


The Society for Musicology in Ireland’s Annual Conference will take place in St Patrick’s College, Dublin City University, on the 10th–12th June 2016 and the RIAM will be well represented.

RIAM Senior Examiners, Jennifer O’Connor-Madsen and Majella Boland, will both be giving papers: Jenny on ‘Contextualising Gender in Irish Music Education’ and Majella on ‘Categorising Commercialism, Gender and Nationalism in 19th-Century Piano Music’.  RIAM DMusPerf candidate, Sylvia O’Brien, will be presenting on ‘Seoirse Bodley and his approach to text from a singer’s perspective’ and RIAM graduate, Gavan Ring, will be speaking about Robert O’Dwyer’s opera, Eithne, which was the topic of his doctorate research. Gavan’s DMusPerf dissertation is freely available online in the RIAM’S TARA collections.

 David Adams: Keynote Speaker at DKIT Music Research Colloquium

David AdamsCongratulations to Keyboard Faculty member, Dr David Adams, who was the keynote speaker at Dundalk Institute of Technology’s Music Research Colloquium on the 19th of May. The title of David’s presentation was A fresh look at J. J. Froberger (1616 – 1667): Germany’s first great keyboard composer. The slides from this presentation are now available in TARA.

RIAM joins TCD Research Repository


RIAM has recently joined Trinty College Dublin’s institutional research repository, TARA. TARA is designed to store, catalogue, index, distribute, and preserve research outputs, including journal articles, conference papers, books and book chapters, theses, recordings, compositions and concert programmes. Material in TARA is Open Access, i.e. fully accessible via Google, Google Scholar.  Find out more about Open Access. The RIAM’s TARA collections will be administered by the RIAM Library. Please contact RIAM Library staff if you would like to submit material to TARA or if you have any queries.

MMUSPerf Research 

On the 10th of March, MMusPerf students, Frances Brand and Éimear McCarthy Luddy gave presentations on their research projects. Éimear’s research focuses on vocal health education in Irish conservatoires while Clarinettist, Frances Brand, is examining the work of Hungarian composer, Miklós Rózsa.
