Announcing the launch of Orchestral Manoeuvres: RIAM Summer Academy for Orchestra
The Royal Irish Academy of Music announces its first Summer course for Orchestra.
Building on our reputation as one of Ireland’s most exciting music conservatoires, we invite students from all over Ireland and abroad to come to Dublin and play great orchestral music with our enthusiastic staff.
This July 11th, we invite you to our beautiful premises on Westland Row in Dublin’s city centre for a Summer Orchestral Course aimed at 14 to 20 year olds.
Orchestral Manoeuvres RIAM
This is a course with a difference:
- The orchestra votes on its own repertoire for the week
- We feature improvisation and sight-reading classes
- We conduct workshops on the anatomy of the orchestra
- We will introduce you to a variety of conductors
- You will participate in a Final Concert in St Andrew’s Church, Westland Row, on Friday July 15th 2011
Under the baton of experienced RIAM conductor James Cavanagh, this is a Summer course you will not forget. Here is a taste of what’s in store:
Full rehearsal – sight reading, followed by a vote on repertoire selection.
String sectionals, with expert string teachers and a public workshop exploring the Wind and Brass sections of the orchestra.
Full rehearsal for orchestra followed by a public workshop exploring the string section of the orchestra. Wind, brass, percussion sectionals. with expert wind, brass and percussion teachers.
Full rehearsal on selected orchestra repertoire and sight reading session.
Full rehearsal with student Conductors which will include input and conducting instruction from Robert Houlihan – orchestral students get to experience a conducting workshop.

So come along, make friends, learn about the orchestra and entertain the city of Dublin in our closing concert.
Students should be between the ages of 14 and 20. Grade 6 upwards is the recommended level and there are no entrance auditions. The cost of the course is €300 and this is non-residential. Completed application form and course fee should be returned to the General Office by Friday 20th May 2011.
