Courses
This degree programme is an exciting development for composition in Ireland as it is the first composition degree run by a performance institution in the country.
In designing this programme, the Academy has focused on training composers in the areas of acoustic and electro-acoustic music, in addition to theoretical support subjects such as harmony and counterpoint, analysis, history and aural awareness. Students can specialise in their area of interest from year three onwards. In addition to these elements, the programme places a strong emphasis on performance, particularly in guaranteeing our composition students frequent performances and recordings of their works played by their fellow students and by professional musicians.
The number of students admitted to the course is small, and therefore applicants are expected to demonstrate a keen interest in composition and should be able to produce a portfolio of original compositions at interview. This programme of studies has been validated and approved by Dublin City University for the award of the Honours Degree: Bachelor of Arts in Composition. Note: All applicants must apply for this course through the CAO.
