Diploma in Music Teaching and Performance (NFQ Level 7 Special Purpose Award)
Our Diploma in Music Teaching and Performance (DipMus) is a widely recognised music qualification accredited by Trinity College Dublin that develops two deeply interconnected skills required by every professional musician. This flexible course provides a choice of performance or pedagogy focused pathways, putting students in charge of their own specialism. Please note the Pedagody Pathway is not available for the Academic Year 2025/26.
Regardless of the pathway you choose, our DipMus will train you to a high level in performance and pedagogy, allowing you to teach your instrument/voice while gaining a wide musical knowledge through classes in performance, musicianship and repertoire as well as seminars and masterclasses.
The Performance Pathway is aimed at those interested in taking an intensive year to concentrate on performing, while developing the skills you need to teach students one-to-one, which can be an important way to supplement income for many professional performers across the world. The principal study on this pathway includes one hour of one-to-one tuition per week in your chosen instrument/voice.
This pathway can act as a one-year post-degree qualification for those postgraduate students who didn’t specialise in music performance but wish to becoming an instrumental/vocal teacher or progress to Masters studies.
It can also act as a direct pathway into year 2 the RIAM Mus.B. Performance Degree subject to reaching the required performing standard.
The Pedagogy Pathway is geared towards the teaching professional who also wishes to develop agility and confidence as a performer. Graduates will be qualified to teach in a variety of settings from conservatoires to the private teaching environment, and primary and secondary schools. The principal study on this pathway includes individual tuition for intensive study of your instrumental discipline, as well as some performance classes.
Many teachers are already busy practitioners in their field and do not have the time to spend a full year intensively studying. By studying part-time, teachers can continue with their practice while developing their skills and gaining a qualification with a more manageable workload.
It is possible to combine pathways by selecting specific modules. This selection is done in the orientation week prior to commencing the course.
