Key Skills Workshops

Réamonn Keary and Lorna Horan will combine forces to present teachers with a guided approach to preparing students for piano exams using the RIAM 2018 piano albums and discussing the potential technical and musical challenges in each piece and addressing ways to tackle these problems. Each participant will receive a copy of the Key Skills Handbook, which includes copies of the annotated scores for all the pieces from Elementary to Grade V and Teaching Notes for each grade.

The main focus of these sessions will include:

  • Elementary – Grade VIII: preparing the pieces for exam performance
  • Selecting the right pieces for each student
  • Discussing the potential challenges in each piece and addressing ways to tackle these problems
  • Identifying the style and character of each piece
  • The art of scale and arpeggio playing from the early stages
  • The importance of the supporting material: Theory, Aural Tests and Sight-Reading
  • How to approach exam day
