Speech and Drama classes at the Royal Irish Academy of Music offer students from Kindergarten (5 years) to Advanced Level II the opportunity to learn to interact with one another with ease and self-assertion in an encouraging, fun and relaxed environment. All means of performance and presentation are used and the emphasis is put on enjoyment, natural ease and, particularly natural speech in all activities. Clear speech is gained through mime, improvisation and performance which is sensitively directed and students confirm their achievements through the internal assessment process at RIAM.
Throughout the various levels students develop through vocal training, speech, mime, communication and acting. The classes aim to instill a deep appreciation of literature, poetry and the world of theatre. Participation in Drama Festivals and Feiseanna is also encouraged. Visits to the theatre both in Ireland and the U.K are arranged by the department throughout the academic year and the selected plays are explored in the classroom situation prior to the visit.
Overseas Literature Tours are also arranged for students and these tours have proven to be a wonderful stimulus for students and parents alike. The drama department links closely with the Royal Shakespeare Company and students have attended talks and workshops at the RSC one example of extending the experience of studying speech and drama beyond the classroom. Courses provided in speech and drama at the Academy not only compliment but also support literature learning at both Primary and Secondary School level.
Entry is by audition where each applicant is required to present a poem, drama extract, mime or selected reading. Each successful applicant is then placed in a class most suited to them in terms of their age and experience.
Training in this area is open to internal and external students and prospective participants are required to fill out the part-time application form available from the General Office. The completed form with the relevant non-refundable fee should be returned by the given closing date which is displayed on the application form.
