Individual Tuition

At the heart of the Academy is a creative and systematic musical training for individuals of all ages. Weekly lessons from 40 to 60 minutes are offered in all classical music disciplines.

Entrance auditions to the Academy are held annually in May/June. Further information is available from the General Office.

  1. Students admitted to this course must prove themselves to be potentially capable of performing public  recitals to a very high level
  2. Admission is by audition, either in person or by audio or videotape from candidates overseas
  3. All admissions must be approved in the first instance by an audition panel set up by the Board of Studies and must then be ratified by the Director of the RIAM
  4. Students on the Artists Diploma course may enrol for up to three years normally. Extensions on this period require the approval of the Board of Studies and also the Director.
  5. In each year of their course students will be required to (a) give a public recital (b) give a chamber music recital of approximately fifty minutes duration (c) to perform a concerto in public with either piano or orchestra. (The student is responsible for arranging the concerto with orchestra). In the case of singers this may be altered to a large work with orchestral accompaniment, a song cycle, a solo cantata or a major role from an opera. A panel appointed by the Board of Studies will judge these performances.
  6. Students will attend individual lessons for 1 - 1½ hours per week, and will also participate in chamber music groups
  7. When they decide to leave the RIAM, students may apply for the Artists Diploma Certificate which will be awarded based on the results of their performances under (5) above
