Kevin Hanafin studied clarinet and saxophone at DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama from 1983 to 1991 as a part-time student. In 1995, he graduated with a BMus (Perf) Degree, winning the Michael McNamara gold medal for excellence in performance in the final year examination. He pursued postgraduate studies at the Royal College of Music, London from 1996 to 1997. He was soloist with the DIT concert band on their American tour in 1996 and soloist with the Irish Youth Wind Ensemble at the NCH and at the Aberdeen International Festival in 1997. In addition he has been a wind finalist in the RTE musician of the future competition and a finalist in the Sceen International Music Festival Aberdeen in 1997. In the same year he was a finalist in the Ulster Bank young musician of the year.
Since 1997, he has been a member of the RTE concert and symphony orchestras. In 2003, he was a concerto soloist with the RTE concert orchestra. Other performance activities include a solo recital at the prestigious Bank of Ireland Arts Centre and participation in the lunchtime classic choice recitals. He is a member of Crash ensemble and has performed with them throughout Canada, USA and Europe. Kevin has performed with Riverdance in their tenth anniversary season in the Gaiety Theatre, Dublin and has taken part in theatre performances in all the major musical productions in Ireland from 1998 to present.
