Why do we offer a pre-instrumental course?
Why do a high percentage of parents send their children to pre-schools /kindergartens? It’s to accommodate the transition period between the baby years and childhood and to begin to introduce the child to culture and to the larger world in preparation for the academic learning that will come later. For my students, it’s the instrumental learning that will come later. Group levels are as follows: 4 – 5 years; 5 – 6 years; 6 – 7 years; and 7 – 8 years. Please note that attendance at this course does not guarantee subsequent acceptance for individual instrumental tuition.
Developing music skills with young children
The pre-instrumental course is designed to promote the basic musical skills for young children between the ages of 4 to 8 years. This course is designed in a very structured, enjoyable and stimulating way and carried out in a manner appropriate to the mental and physical stages of development of the child.
It’s based on the Kodaly concept of music education which could be summed up as the practice and belief in musicianship development through singing. The voice is the primary instrument used in Kodaly training. Singing has a profound effect upon the child’s physical, social, emotional and intellectual development and is the most direct way of making a musical response. Not only is this instrument free and portable, but because it is part of our bodies anything that is learned through singing is learned
