RIAM Intermediate Orchestra

The RIAM Intermediate Orchestra was formed in 1988 as part of a major overhaul of orchestral activity at the Academy. The average age of its members, who come from all over Ireland, is fourteen. The Orchestra rehearses at the RIAM every Saturday during term time.

Under their conductor James Cavanagh the Orchestra has proven to be one of the most accomplished and versatile groups of its kind in Ireland. It has travelled abroad on many occasions to countries such as Switzerland, Norway and Germany, participating in a variety of youth music festivals. The Orchestra has also performed in almost every county in Ireland.

One of the main aims of the Orchestra is to further the outreach policy of the Academy. To this end it has given many "Meet the Orchestra" presentations in schools and arts centres around Ireland, notably at the Ark Cultural Centre for Children. It also regularly performs as part of the Education and Outreach Programme of the National Concert Hall.
