Programme for ChamberFest DUBLIN 2022 Announced
ChamberFest Dublin, one of the Royal Irish Academy of Music's flagship events, welcomes the return of audiences to venues across Dublin in 2022 for a feast of chamber music.
Taking place from Monday 25 April to Sunday 5 May, this ambitious and student-led festival offers audiences a selection of morning, lunchtime, and evening chamber music concerts from the RIAM's third level students. Following online streamed performances in 2021, students are excited to see the return of live audiences to the RIAM's Georgian home on Westland Row and other festival venues 1WML in The Windmill Quarter, St Stephen's Church "The Pepper Canister", and St. Finian's Lutheran Church.
The festival features 36 chamber music groups in 12 live concerts of works by Beethoven, Haydn, Shostakovich, Dvorak, Debussy, Mozart and more, alongside contemporary works by Irish composers Amanda Feery and Jonathan Nangle and lesser-heard works by Amy Beach, Mel Bonis, Samuel Coleridge Taylor and Jan Dismas Zelenka. The programme explores themes of interculturality, a journey through Baroque Europe, and celebrates collaboration through 'side-by-side' performances with RIAM Faculty. The festival also sees the first performance of our new strategic partnership with Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris under the Ireland-France Joint Plan of Action signed in August 2021 during the visit of President Macron to Ireland.
Founded in 2019 by the RIAM's Head of Strings and Chamber Music, Sarah Sew, ChamberFest Dublin is rooted in the RIAM's aim to provide full-time students with high-quality and meaningful performance experiences. Speaking about the exciting approach to programming the festival, Sarah Sew said: "The creation of ChamberFest Dublin is a truly collaborative process, with students and faculty working together in multiple aspects. From the initial formation of groups and choosing of repertoire to the programming themes that run through the festival, behind the scenes production and festival promotion — students, faculty and administrative staff have co-created, with students playing a leading role. The range and depth of works featured in the festival are testament to the creativity of our students and faculty. After the last two years of challenges, their enthusiasm remains undimmed, and it is with huge pleasure that we present such an exciting, collaboratively produced two-week chamber music festival to live audiences."

Interculturality open with works based on folk tunes from Norway and the Eastern Cape of South Africa transformed into classical settings by the Danish String Quartet and German musician/writer Sören Sieg. Irish composer, Amanda Feery’s Give us the Night takes inspiration from abandoned nightclub spaces on a U.S. road trip, exploring patterns, timbres, and harmonies from early house music, a style with origins in Chicago and Detroit. Feery writes “What interests me most about these now-defunct spaces, is that they were some of the most inclusive, non-segregated, LGBTQ+-friendly spaces in the U.S.” American composer Steve Reich’s Mallet Quartet was co-commissioned by percussion ensembles across the globe – by four percussion groups based in Hungary, Canada, USA and Australia. The concert closes with a Pause, by leading Irish composer and RIAM faculty member Jonathan Nangle. Inspired by the idea of data glitches in both music and visual media – a snippet of music by early twentieth-century American composer Charles Ives is processed, rearranged and deliberately glitched, serving as a springboard to new material. Pause is performed by RIAM’s Ensemble Interforma joined by guest musicians from the Paris Conservatoire for an international collaboration promoting cultural exchange between France and Ireland.

Exchange – Collaborate – Side-by-Side presents works by Zelenka, Dvorak and Coleridge Taylor with students and faculty playing alongside each other as colleagues. This format is one of music making’s most inspirational — students learn in real life contexts of playing beside an established professional and, for faculty, there is nothing quite like the energy and enthusiasm that comes from young colleagues playing repertoire for the very first time.
