Exams Scholarships and Competitions

We want to help recognise and develop the performing artists of the future. The RIAM is delighted to offer these unique access opportunities: 

(a) RIAM Exams Entrance Scholarships – providing free tuition in the subject of the exam at RIAM for one year (September 2019 to June 2020), and the obligatory Musicianship classes.  

(b) Cash Prizes, ranging from €150 to €300 across various Groups 

Dates:  Eligible candidates must apply by Monday, 8 April 2019 stating whether they wish to compete for a Scholarship or a Prize. The awards will be determined by competitive exam in June 2019.

The criteria for eligibility are set out below:

Qualifying Exams and Age Limits

Instrumentalists – Groups A, B and C; Singing Only – Group D

Group A

(Scholarship or 1st Prize €150, 2nd Prize €120)

For candidates who obtain a minimum of 90% in Grade I or higher in a Local Centre Exam held between 10 April 2018 and 31 March 2019.

Age limit: Under 10 years of age on 31 December of the year in which the exam was taken.

Group B

(Scholarship or 1st Prize €225, 2nd Prize €150)

For candidates who obtain a minimum of 90% in Grade III or higher in a Local Centre Exam held between 10 April 2018 and 31 March 2019.

Age limit: Under 12 years of age on 31 December of the year in which the exam was taken.

Group C

(Scholarship or 1st Prize €300, 2nd Prize €225)

For candidates who obtain a minimum of 90% in Grade VI or higher in or a Local Centre Exam held between 10 April 2018 and 31 March 2019.

Age limit: Under 15 years of age on 31 December of the year in which the exam was taken.

Senior Certificate  Age limit: Under 17 years of age on 31 December of the year in which the exam was taken.

Group D

Scholarship (Singing Students Only)

For Candidates who obtain a minimum of 90% in Grade VIII in a Local Centre Exam held between 10 April 2018 and 31 March 2019

Age limit: Under 18 years of age on 31 December of the year in which the exam was taken.

Scholarships & Prizes – General Regulations

  • Past or present pupils of the Academy in the instrument/subject of examination, or an allied instrument/subject, are not eligible to compete.
  • Candidates may not enter for more than one Scholarship or Prize in the same subject.
  • Candidates winning a Prize or a Scholarship cannot compete in the same grade the following year.
  • Candidates requiring accompaniment must provide their own accompanist for the competition.

Requirements for Scholarship/Prize Competition

  • Two contrasting pieces/items of own choice of the same or higher standard as the pieces/items selected for the original Local Centre examination.
  • Scales & arpeggios, aural requirements and sight-reading, as for the music grade passed at qualifying Local Centre examination.
  • Theoretical Questions/Conversation.
