Course Introduction

Description

Join expert choral conductor and RIAM teacher Amy Ryan on this interactive, lively, and varied online course between February and April, which will use the Kodály concept to explore the following:

  • Understanding rhythm and metre
  • Pitching notes
  • Relative solfa
  • Tips and tricks to sight-read with confidence 

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will

  • Demonstrate an understanding of simple metre
  • Perform simple rhythm patterns with confidence
  • Recognise and understand basic score markings (tempo, dynamics, articulation)
  • Sight-sing simple melodies from staff notation using relative solfa
  • Recognise fixed pitches in the treble clef

Age: 18+

Tutors

Amy Ryan is a conductor, lecturer and performer based in Dublin, Ireland.  Amy currently lectures in Musicianship at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, and previously at Trinity College Dublin. 

Amy is a specialist in Kodály-based pedagogy: Chair of Kodály Ireland from 2018-2022, she completed her studies at the Kodály Institute of the Liszt Academy of Music, Hungary, earning both a Master’s degree in Kodály Music Pedagogy (distinction) and Advanced Diploma in Choral Conducting (distinction). She earned her Bachelor of Music at CIT Cork School of Music with first-class honours. 

As a conductor, she founded Cuore Chamber Choir, leading them to first prizes at all the major choral competitions in Ireland.  Amy is Artistic Director of the UCD Philharmonic Choir, and has appeared as a guest conductor with the UCD Symphony Orchestra in the NCH. As conductor of Jubilate Choir recent performances include the requiems of Mozart, Fauré and Duruflé and the Irish premiere of Graun’s Der Tod Jesu. She has previously worked with Irish National Opera, North Dublin Opera, Lyric Opera chorus, and St. Mary’s Pro-Cathedral Girls’ Choir. She regularly sings with the choir of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin and has performed throughout Europe and the United States as a cellist, flautist and choral singer. She has studied with conductors such as Peter Erdei, Robert Houlihan, Simon Carrington, Alice Farnham and Volker Hempfling.
