Call for New Works: Sonic Adventures for Brass at New Music Dublin
Following the recent Writing for Brass online workshops hosted by the Royal Irish Academy of Music with Andy Duncan, and St Andrews Music Participation with John Wallace and the Wallace Collection, we're looking for 5 World Premieres of accessible new music for Brass Quintet to be premiered by Earlsfort Brass from the RIAM by live stream at New Music Dublin on Saturday 24th April - and yours could be one of them!
What we're looking for:
We are looking for accessible short new works for brass quintet that fulfil the following criteria:
- Duration: 2-3 minutes (maximum)
- Instrumentation: Standard instrumentation of 2 Trumpets in Bb, French Horn in F, Tenor Trombone in concert pitch and Tuba in concert pitch
- Deadline for submissions: 5pm on Monday 19th April
- Format for submissions: via email, pdf (full score and parts), with (where possible) midi / mp3 realisation
- Works must be previously unperformed and unpublished
Who will make the selection:
The selection panel will consist of 5 Irish Regional Band conductors:
- Gavin Warren (Dublin)
- Ger Condon (Cork)
- Julie Quinlan (Waterford)
- Andrew Jordan (Limerick)
- Jonathan Sharpe (Belfast)
together with David Collins (Head of Wind, Brass and Percussion at the RIAM) and John Harris, Festival Director, New Music Dublin, who will chair the panel.
How we will make the selection:
Sonic Adventures for Brass is the beginning of a year-long project to create new works to add to the repertoire for Youth and Regional Brass Bands. The composers of the 5 selected works will be invited, after the premiere of their works at New Music Dublin 2021, to be commissioned to develop longer works suitable for this repertoire, mentored by Andy Duncan and the members of the Wallace Collection, to be premiered by the bands from Dublin, Cork, Waterford, Limerick and Belfast as part of New Music Dublin 2022.
The five conductors on the selection panel are looking for works that show musical imagination and skill paired with an understanding of the accessibility and technical requirements of writing for bands at this level.
What will happen if your work is selected:
We will notify you if your work has been selected by Wednesday 21st April, and each of the 5 selected composers will receive a bursary of €500.
The selected works will be premiered by Earlsfort Brass on Saturday 24th April via livestream as part of New Music Dublin (time TBC).
Following the livestream, the composers of the 5 selected works will be invited to develop longer works for brass band, mentored by Andy Duncan and the members of the Wallace Collection, to be premiered by the bands from Dublin, Cork, Waterford, Limerick and Belfast as part of New Music Dublin 2022. These will be a separate commissioning agreement and payment.
How to submit your work:
Please send your submissions (as pdf / mp3 as requested above) to email@example.com by 5pm on Monday 19th April 2021 at the very latest, subject line "Submission to Sonic Adventures for Brass". Please note that late submissions cannot be accepted due to the extremely short turnaround time between submission and premiere.
