Camerata Ireland & RIAM Launch Side-By-Side Scheme

Published: 27th Jan, 2020

Undergraduate and Postgraduate students from the Royal Irish Academy of Music will get a taste of life as a professional musician as they take part in a new initiative with Camerata Ireland. The side by side scheme will give thirteen talented young RIAM musicians the opportunity to take part in rehearsals and concerts with Ireland’s only cross-border chamber orchestra, Camerata Ireland, under the direction of the internationally renowned pianist and conductor Barry Douglas. Their first collaborative performance will take place at the National Concert Hall on Wednesday 29th January, with a Beethoven extravaganza.

This orchestral scheme will give students a deeper insight into how a professional orchestra works on a daily basis, and further enhance their playing through an immersive training experience. Over the course of the next two years, these talented students will join the orchestra for several days of rehearsal as they prepare for a series of concerts at the National Concert Hall. This exciting programme kicks off this month, as the orchestra tackles Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.1 and No.5, as well as the composer’s Coriolan Overture.

For Camerata Ireland, this partnership is an essential aspect of our mission to nurture the next generation of Irish talent. By giving students the opportunity to experience the rigour, quality, and synergy of a professional orchestra, we hope that they will enter the orchestral work-force energised and inspired by music making at its highest level. We’re thrilled that this new partnership with the Royal Irish Academy of Music is getting off the ground this month, and are throughly looking forward to welcoming the students into the Camerata Ireland family!

At the RIAM, we strive to provide our students with the most well rounded musical education possible. Our collaboration with Camerata Ireland will allow our students to develop and hone their orchestral and ensemble playing, while being mentored by some of Ireland’s most successful orchestral players. In addition to the invaluable experience of joining Camerata Ireland in rehearsals and concerts, the guidance and support of Camerata Ireland’s musicians will give our students the confidence and professionalism required to succeed in the modern orchestral world.
