We are delighted to share that soprano Ava Dodd, a distinguished alumna of RIAM, has been named one of Classic FM’s 30 Rising Stars for 2025. This prestigious recognition celebrates young musicians under 30 who are shaping the future of classical music.
Ava completed her Bachelor in Music Performance at RIAM in 2020, studying under the late Professor Mary Brennan. During her time at the Academy, she showcased her versatility and commitment through leading roles in RIAM Opera productions, including the title role in Cavalli’s La Calisto (2020), Rachel Hoddy in Stephen McNeff’s Banished (2019), and multiple ensemble roles in Francesca Caccini’s La liberazione di Ruggiero (2019).
Her outstanding performance and dedication were recognised when she received the €15,000 RDS Music Bursary in 2020, Ireland’s largest classical music bursary at the time.
Following her undergraduate studies, Ava pursued a Master’s degree at the Royal College of Music in London, studying with Professor Janis Kelly. Her postgraduate training further refined her artistry, leading to performances with institutions such as the English National Opera, Oper Frankfurt, and the Wexford Festival Opera.
Ava's accolades include the Yves Paternot Prize at the 2023 Verbier Festival, recognising her as the most accomplished and promising musician of the annual Academy for young professional musicians. She has also been a prize-winner in the Hans Gabor Belvedere International Singing Competition and the Boston District winner of the Met Opera Competition.
Classic FM’s Rising Stars list is renowned for spotlighting exceptional young talent in the classical music world. Previous honourees have included luminaries such as pianist Bruce Liu, who gained international acclaim after winning the 2021 Chopin Competition, and conductor Klaus Mäkelä, now chief conductor of the Oslo Philharmonic and Orchestre de Paris. Being named a Rising Star often serves as a catalyst for global recognition and career advancement.
As a Harewood Artist with the English National Opera for the 2025/2026 season, Ava is set to perform roles such as Adina in The Elixir of Love and Barbarina in The Marriage of Figaro. She will also appear as Sandrina in Mozart’s La Finta Giardiniera at Cadogan Hall, London, and as Madeleine in Adolphe Adam's Le postillon de Lonjumeau at Oper Frankfurt.
Everyone at RIAM extends heartfelt congratulations to Ava on this well-deserved recognition. Her achievements continue to inspire current and future students of the Academy.
