The Royal Irish Academy of Music (RIAM) and The Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) in Canada have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Toronto on 29 January 2026, formalising a new partnership between the two national conservatoires. The signing took place during the Government of Ireland’s Creative Industry Trade Mission to Canada, led by Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, Patrick O’Donovan TD, whose visit aims to strengthen cultural, educational, and creative ties ahead of the Canada‑Ireland 180 programme in 2027. The trade mission includes engagements with Canadian political, cultural, and educational leaders, and visits to key institutions such as the Royal Conservatory of Music.
The MoU establishes a collaborative framework running from 2026 to 2028, reflecting a shared commitment to advancing music education and cultural exchange. It outlines cooperation in early childhood music development, where RIAM’s adoption of the Smart Start™ model for children aged 0–4 aligns with RCM’s expertise, as well as joint initiatives for developing both nations' young artists, strengthening cultural diplomacy, and facilitating curriculum exchange between the two national institutions. These areas of cooperation are designed to promote artistic excellence and deepen bilateral connections between Ireland and Canada.
Positioned within the broader context of the Creative Industry Trade Mission, the signing underscores how institutional partnerships play a central role in Ireland’s international cultural engagement. The visit by Minister O’Donovan highlights the value of cultural cooperation as a driver of diplomacy, exchange, and shared heritage, situating this new RIAM–RCM partnership as a meaningful contribution to the strengthening of Irish‑Canadian cultural relations.
