In March 2025, Richard O'Donnell, percussion professor at the Royal Irish Academy of Music (RIAM), visited the Liszt Academy in Budapest for a series of masterclasses, invited by Professor Szabolcs Joo through the Erasmus programme. During his three-day visit, Richard worked with eight advanced percussion students, who performed a variety of solo pieces, including works by Askell Masson, John Psathas, Siegfried Fink, and Eric Sammut.
Richard was impressed by the friendly, collegial atmosphere within the percussion department, led by Professors Joo and Fabry Boglarka. The students showcased excellent preparation, and the masterclasses also included discussions on orchestral repertoire, such as works by Dvořák, Stravinsky, and Shostakovich.
Reflecting on the experience, Richard highlighted the value of the Erasmus programme, which fostered professional exchange and lasting connections with fellow percussion educators.
