World-Renowned Oboist Albrecht Mayer Visits RIAM

Published: 11th May, 2025

The Royal Irish Academy of Music is honoured to welcome internationally renowned oboist Albrecht Mayer, principal oboe of the Berlin Philharmonic, for a very special double appearance on Sunday, 8 June 2025.

The Wonder of Sound – Book Launch & Recital

4:00pm  |  €25  |   Whyte Recital Hall

The day begins with The Wonder of Sound – Book Launch & Recital, a unique opportunity to hear Mayer read from his acclaimed autobiography The Wonder of Sound: How the Power of Music Healed Me. In an intimate conversation with co-author Heidi Friedrich, Mayer shares a deeply personal story — from his childhood struggles with stuttering to his extraordinary career on the world stage.

Alongside readings, Mayer will perform on oboe, joined by pianist Dearbhla Brosnan, bringing to life the music that has shaped his journey. The event is a moving exploration of music’s power to transform and heal — a sentiment echoed by Mayer’s Berlin Philharmonic colleague Sarah Willis, who calls the book “a backstage look into his journey” and praises his “sublime” sound.

A book signing will follow the event.
