Bringing together some of Ireland’s finest musicians, joined by a growing body of international students making the Academy their musical home, these spirited musicians have welcomed such distinguished maestri as Kerem Hasan, Chloé van Soeterstède and Peter Whelan in recent years.
Assistant conductor at Greek National Opera and the conductor of the El Sistema Greece Youth Orchestra, Kyriaki Kountouri is a passionate force in music education in Southern Europe. Making her Irish début with the RIAM Philharmonia in December, she brings two of the orchestral repertoire’s most-loved works, Schubert’s dramatic “Unfinished” and Tchaikovsky’s beautifully stirring Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture. In addition, 5 Greek Dances by Nikos Skalkottas, universally recognised as a leading member of the Second Viennese School and a prominent Greek composer feature on the programme.
Programme
PI Tchaikovsky: Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture
Nikos Skalkottas: 5 Greek Dances for String Orchestra, AK 11b
Franz Schubert: Symphony No. 8 in B minor, D759, “Unfinished”
