The Experience

When certainty disappears, what happens to your leadership?

The moments that test leadership rarely arrive with a script. They demand attention, judgement and the confidence to act before everything is clear.

This workshop brings those moments into focus through music. Working with RIAM music faculty, participants encounter unfamiliar situations that reveal how they respond, make decisions and influence what happens next.

Professional musical performance draws on deep listening, judgement, decisive action, adaptability and influence under pressure. These capabilities provide a practical lens through which to examine your own leadership.

The experience creates something concrete to reflect on: the choices you made, the signals you noticed and the effect of your actions. In formats that include a structured leadership debrief, Timoney faculty help translate these observations into practical insights for your leadership context.

Why Music?

Hear the impact of your leadership.

In music, the effect of a decision can be immediate. A gesture changes the direction. A pause creates space. A missed signal calls for a response.

These experiences make aspects of leadership tangible: when to intervene, when to listen, how to communicate intent and how to recover when events take an unexpected turn.

Music offers an unfamiliar setting in which to examine familiar leadership challenges. Away from established roles and routines, participants can notice their instincts, test different approaches and reflect on their impact.

Connect the experience to the conditions you create as a leader: how decisions are made, how people respond to change and how intent becomes action.

Your Learning Journey

The session follows a five-stage arc, with each step creating a deliberate leadership experience in musical form:

CHOOSE	Select an instrument or sound source and decide how to begin.	Clarify your intent. Notice the assumptions shaping your choices.
ENGAGE	Make your first sound and explore what follows.	Take initiative when the situation is unfamiliar and the outcome uncertain.
LISTEN	Attend to sound, silence and the signals around you.	Read the situation. Distinguish what needs your attention before deciding how to act.
INTEGRATE	Respond to the music as it develops, noticing the effect of your contribution.	Recognise when to lead, when to respond and how your decisions influence what happens next.
EXECUTE	Put your choices into practice in a live musical performance.	Act under pressure. Translate judgement and intent into decisive action when the outcome matters.

The experience brings together the complementary perspectives of Timoney Leadership Institute and the Royal Irish Academy of Music. RIAM faculty guide the musical experience; Timoney faculty lead the structured leadership reflection in the formats that include it.

Leadership Faculty — Timoney Leadership Institute

Experienced leadership development facilitators help participants examine the choices they make under pressure and the impact they have on others.

Through guided reflection and discussion, they connect the musical experience to executive responsibilities: exercising judgement, communicating intent, navigating uncertainty and influencing action.

Their role is to help you turn observations from the workshop into practical questions and actions relevant to your organisation.

Music Faculty — Royal Irish Academy of Music

Performing musicians and music educators bring the disciplines of conservatoire training into a hands-on leadership setting.

Drawing on musical performance, improvisation and deep listening, they guide participants through experiences that make timing, presence, adaptability and decision-making immediately tangible.

Their role is to create the musical conditions in which you can explore your responses and hear the effect of your choices.

The Setting

Founded in 1848, the Royal Irish Academy of Music has been shaping artistic excellence for almost two centuries and is ranked among the world's top music conservatoires (12th in the world for music, QS University Rankings 2026). Its graduates perform in leading orchestras, opera houses, ensembles and educational institutions around the globe.

The Academy's expertise lies in developing performers capable of combining technical mastery, creative expression, disciplined preparation and confident execution under pressure, qualities equally relevant in leadership.

The venue is itself part of the learning. Stepping into a world-class performance space changes how people think, act, and relate to each other. That shift begins before the first note is played.

Workshop Formats

Three formats are available, designed to suit different objectives, group sizes, and budgets:

PLATINUM

RIAM musical immersion followed by an IESE Business School professor-led debrief, connecting what happens in the room with the leadership challenges participants face in their organisations.

Duration: 3-hour experiential workshop + structured debrief

Ideal for: Senior executive teams, strategic offsites and board development.

GOLD

RIAM musical immersion followed by a Timoney facilitator-led debrief, translating the experience into practical learning around leadership, trust, collaboration and performance.

Duration: 3-hour experiential workshop + structured debrief

Facilitators: RIAM Faculty Member + Senior Facilitator, Timoney Leadership Institute

Ideal for: Leadership programmes, executive cohorts and senior team development.

SILVER

A standalone RIAM musical leadership experience introducing the relationship between listening, initiative, adaptability and collective performance.
