The Open Youth Orchestra of Ireland (OYOI) is the first orchestra led by disabled people in the island of Ireland. It celbrates accessibility, impact, and innovation in ensemble music performance.
Their inaugural concert will take place on Sunday 29th September at Athlone Institute of Technology. All are welcome and admission is free, booking is avilable on Eventbrite.
The founding of the OYOI is the next stage of the Le Chéile programme, a flagship initiative of the Creative Ireland Programme’s National Creativity Fund. Their music output comes from the creative and collaborative use of conventional musical instruments blended with the latest adaptive music technology, producing a cutting edge, highly original and contemporary sound. The orchestra unites through the scientifically proven gestural system 'Conductology', created by Dr. Denise White of Ulster University.
The foundation partners in this project are the Royal Irish Academy of Music, Ulster University, Athlone Institute of Technology, Cork School of Music and the Cope Foundation.
The OYOI has been awarded funding from Social Innovation Fund Ireland’s Ignite Fund and its home in Dublin has been secured through the support of Avolon.
