2024 RDS Bursary recipient Adam Buttimer, who completed his Bachelor of Music at the Royal Irish Academy of Music (RIAM) in 2024 and is currently enrolled in the RIAM Professional Mentorship Programme, will appear as soloist with the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) on Tuesday, 24 June at 1:05 p.m.
A talented tubist studying under RIAM faculty member and NSO musician Francis Magee, Adam will feature in a dynamic programme designed to transport listeners beyond the everyday. The concert includes the stirring drama of Sibelius’s Finlandia, the spirited finale of Farrenc’s Symphony No. 3, the poignant lyricism of Grieg’s Death of Åse, and the mischievous energy of In the Hall of the Mountain King—culminating in the dazzling, otherworldly soundscape of Stravinsky’s The Firebird.
Tuba player Adam Buttimer is winner of the RDS Bursary 2024, Feis Ceoil 2024 Senior Brass Recital, and the Audrey Chisholm Award in 2023. He was a finalist in the Freemasons Musician of the Year, Yamaha Concerto Competition at Dublin Brass Week, the Trench Award, and the Maura Dowdall Concerto Competition. Solo endeavours include Vaughan William Concerto for Bass Tuba with Trinity College Orchestra, and a performance at Farmleigh House as part of Feis Ceoil’s 125th Anniversary. A keen chamber musician, Adam has performed at festivals such as Music for Wexford and West Wicklow Chamber Music Festival, as part of Irish Chamber Brass. Adam is a founding member of Banshee Brass, who won the ChamberFest Prize in 2024. Adam has performed with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, Sibelius Symphony Orchestra, RIAM Philharmonia and the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland. Expanding the tuba repertoire is a matter of great importance to Adam, and he delights in premiering new works.
