Individual Lessons

At Junior RIAM, we offer individual tuition to students from age 8 upwards. Our faculty are experienced and enthusiastic teachers, providing guidance in technique, style and interpretation across a range of over 20 different instruments and voice.

For orchestral students, individual tuition is combined with ensemble performance, starting with string orchestra or junior wind ensemble and building up to symphony orchestra. Pianists and singers have the opportunity to join RIAM's Junior Choirs.

Regular solo performance opportunities are offered in Faculty Concerts, Competitions and in Assessments.

Students accepted onto the RIAM Young Scholar Programme additionally receive masterclasses with visiting artists, international exchanges and chamber music coaching.

Junior RIAM students taking individual lessons take the following weekly curriculum:

Individual tuition is offered in the following:

Woodwind: Flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, recorder
Brass: Trumpet, cornet, French horn, tenor horn, euphonium, trombone, tuba
Strings: Violin, viola, cello, double bass, harp, guitar
Keyboard: Piano, organ, harpsichord, accordion
Percussion
Voice


Students are permitted to take a second or third study.

Preparatory, Levels 1 – 4
Time: 40 minutes
Numbers: 10 students maximum

Levels 5 - 9
Time: 40 minutes
Numbers:  6 students maximum

Level 10
Time: 60 minutes
Numbers:  4 students maximum

Chamber music coaching is regarded as an important aspect of young musicians training, and all Junior RIAM students have opportunities to receive coaching in carefully selected small groups that include duos, trios and quartets.

One of the following Junior Performing Groups as appropriate:

Wind Ensemble - 1.5 hours

Orchestra – 1.5 or 2 hours

Choir (optional) – 1.25 hours

Jazz Ensemble – 1.5 hours
