Every year, hundreds of applicants go through the audition process for places on RIAM undergraduate & Postgraduate courses. After applying you will be assigned an audition date. Candidates based on the Island of Ireland will be required to audition in person at the RIAM Campus in Dublin. International applicants can submit via online video submission.
We want you to do the best audition you can, to hear you at your best, and to see the full potential within. For more information and advice on this process, please view the documents below:
Program Selection: Choose pieces that highlight your strengths and show versatility. Organize your program to make a strong first impression.
Research: Understand what the conservatoire and specific course expect. Knowing the panel's preferences and the institution's culture can inform your preparation.
Practice Routine: Establish a strict practice schedule with set deadlines to ensure each piece is performance-ready well in advance.
Mock Auditions: Simulate the audition environment by organizing run-throughs in front of peers or mentors. This can help reduce anxiety and improve performance under pressure.
Fundamentals: Focus on core elements such as intonation, rhythm, dynamics, and style. Ensure these basics are secure before diving into complex repertoire.
Record Yourself: Use both audio and video recordings to evaluate your performance. This allows you to pinpoint areas that need improvement and refine your interpretation.
Practice Techniques: Alternate between different practice methods like block practice and random practice to reinforce memory and performance security.
Simulate Performance Conditions: Practice performing at unusual times or in unfamiliar settings to build resilience. If possible, arrange mock auditions in front of family or friends.
Logistics: Plan your arrival time, attire, and even your meals on the audition day. Being comfortable and confident in your environment helps you focus on your performance. Approach the audition like a concert. Arrive in good time, make sure you have everything you will need and dress comfortably. Formal concert dress is not required.
Recorded Auditions: For video submissions, pay attention to the recording venue's acoustics (not too boomy or dry), lighting, microphone placement and camera angles. Test your setup beforehand to ensure high-quality audio and visual output.
First Impressions Matter: Greet the panel confidently, maintain eye contact, and be mindful of your body language. If your audition is open, placement of your stand and other equipment can impact your presentation.
Be Yourself: Show genuine passion and enthusiasm for your music. Panels look for potential, willingness to learn, and a drive to succeed, in addition to technical skill.
Positive Mindset: Remember that auditions are a learning experience. Use this opportunity to refine your skills and grow as a musician. Even if the outcome isn't as expected, each audition is a step forward in your artistic journey.
