A group of children play musical instruments

Free neurodivergent-friendly Workshops at RIAM

Published: 27th Jun, 2023

Designed and led by RIAM student Adam Buttimer, in conjunction with RIAM Head of Music Therapy  Jessica Harris, Exploring Music Together is a short, interactive and neurodivergent-friendly summer camp that introduces children and adults to the world of music-making through brass instruments.

Musical instruments can be intimidating to those with hypersensitivity or hyposensitivity and are often avoided, especially the sometimes LOUD brass instruments! Exploring Music Together provides a sensory-safe space for neurodivergent individuals curious about music-making with trumpets, trombones and tubas to explore these instruments and their sounds in a controlled and relaxed environment.

These classes start with a 40-minute Instrument Petting Zoo to get used to the space and performers and to explore brass instruments through looking, touching, and hearing. Performers will introduce each instrument and invite participants to become familiar with the instrument before playing and exploring the sounds they make. Have a go at playing an instrument yourself!

20 minutes of free time follows to explore the venue further, ask questions and process all the new sounds heard before making our way to seats for a concert by a RIAM Brass Quintet.

This fun, interactive 45-minute concert will involve well-known music, lots of audience involvement and will be narrated by an expert to provide context and guidance to participants throughout to ensure everyone knows what to expect from each piece of music.

Exploring Music Together Neurodivergent Friendly Summer Camp is produced by the Royal Irish Academy is Music and supported by Matheson, the law firm of choice for international companies and financial institutions doing business in and from Ireland.

Places are free due to the kind support of Matheson. Capacity will be strictly limited to ensure a comfortable environment for participants, early booking is advised.
