Diploma in Music Teaching and Performance

New Part-Time Study Option for RIAM / TCD Diploma in Music Teaching & Performance

Published: 10th Nov, 2021

The Royal Irish Academy of Music (RIAM), and Trinity College Dublin (TCD), have updated the popular Diploma in Music Teaching and Performance course in response to feedback from busy instrumental and vocal teachers across Ireland. This more flexible iteration of the course reflects the busy lifestyle of studio teachers who already have a heavy workload but want to attain a Diploma or Certificate qualification to enhance their practice. The RIAM/TCD DipMus now provides the option to study full-time for one year or part-time over two years, putting students in charge of their own pace of study. Additionally, students can sign up for a one year Certificate in Music (CertMus), equivalent to year one of the part-time Diploma, and leave with a certificate after one year or continue to Diploma study in year two.

The course has also been updated to reflect the interest in expressed in a teaching focussed approach with less emphasis on performance. The new DipMus & CertMus provide a choice of performance or pedagogy focused pathways.

The Performance Pathway is aimed at those interested in taking an intensive year to concentrate on performing, while developing the skills you need to teach students one-to-one, which can be an important way to supplement income for many professional performers across the world. The principal study on this pathway includes one hour of one-to-one tuition per week in your chosen instrument/voice.

The Pedagogy Pathway is geared towards the teaching professional who also wishes to develop agility and confidence as a performer. Graduates will be qualified to teach in a variety of settings from conservatoires to the private teaching environment. The principal study on this pathway includes individual tuition for intensive study of your instrumental discipline, as well as some performance classes.

Regardless of the pathway you choose, the DipMus & CertMus will train you to a high level in performance and pedagogy, allowing you to teach your instrument/voice while gaining a wide musical knowledge through classes in performance, musicianship and repertoire as well as seminars and masterclasses.

The early bird deadline for applications for September 2022 entry is 30 November 2021. Entries received up to 4 January 2022 will be charged at a higher rate.
