The Royal Irish Academy of Music is delighted to announce that the Treske Quartet have been named as the ‘Young Quartet in Residence’ for 2023/2024. The new position offers a promising young quartet the opportunity to rehearse intensively, develop artistic projects and establish new professional contacts while receiving mentorship from RIAM chamber music faculty to support their emerging career as a professional string quartet.
The Treske Quartet (Oliver Baily and Mollie Wrafter, violins; Abigail Hammett, viola; Robert Wheatley, cello) is an emerging ensemble based in Dublin and Manchester. The quartet was formed in 2017 and has performed in Ireland, the UK, USA and Canada, notably at the Banff Centre, West Cork Chamber Music Festival, South Downs Summer Music, New Music on the Point, Rydale Festival, Llandeilo International Music Festival, and Buxton Recital Series. They were delighted to receive 2nd place at the 2023 Cavatina Competition in Wigmore Hall. The quartet recently completed the RNCM String Quartet Studio course and continue to receive mentorship through ChamberStudio at King’s Place in London. The quartet’s identity lies in their commitment to championing repertoire by 20th & 21st century composers. Treske loves to work with living composers, acting as a platform for their work to be presented and in doing so, contributing to the growing pool of modern string quartet music.
“The Treske Quartet is currently at a pivotal stage in their career with important debuts and engagements. Their new role as Young Quartet in Residence at RIAM offers the Treske Quartet continued mentorship and professional development opportunities with both RIAM’s chamber music faculty and international visiting artists, performance opportunities, use of RIAM’s practice facilities in its newly opened state-of-the-art campus on Westland Row, and close connection to RIAM’s chamber music programme and chamber music students. A critical aspect of the Young Quartet in Residence is how the Treske Quartet, as an emerging professional quartet, would work with younger students and act as a role model, providing inspiration to RIAM student quartets and chamber groups who aspire towards careers as professional chamber musicians. I look forward to working closely with the Treske Quartet on a number of projects and supporting the development of their own artistic voice as a quartet.”
