Top Tips & Dealing with Nerves

Top Tips & Exam Nerves
Exams can feel exciting—and a little nerve-wracking too! We've gathered some top tips from RIAM teachers and students to help you feel calm, prepared, and ready to shine.

Before the Exam

  • Play for someone in advance. Try performing your pieces for family or friends. It helps to get used to playing in front of others.
  • Check your gear the night before. Make sure you have everything ready - your music, instrument, music stand, and theory certificate (if taking theory separately).
  • Know where you're going. Double-check your exam venue and allow extra time for travel. Arriving early means you’ll have time to warm up and settle your nerves.
  • Get a good night's sleep. Being well-rested makes a big difference on the day.

In the Waiting Room

  • Warm up your body and mind. Take deep breaths—try breathing in through your nose for 5 seconds, and out through your mouth for 5 seconds. Repeat a few times to relax.
  • Think positively. Focus on the parts of your pieces that you enjoy. You've worked hard—now’s your chance to show it.

During the Exam

  • Make yourself comfortable. Adjust the piano stool or music stand to suit you. RIAM examiner and piano teacher Anthony Byrne reminds pianists: Don’t sit too close to the piano—give your arms space to move!
  • Start your way. You can begin with what feels best—scales or pieces. Choose what helps you feel most at ease.
  • Ask if you’re unsure. Examiners are happy to repeat instructions—just ask.
  • For sight-reading, use the time the examiner gives you to look through it. Look through the music carefully, then keep going once you start—even if it’s not perfect.
  • Don’t dread the singing! Lots of instrumentalists find the aural tests tough, but they’re over in no time—give it your best shot.

Final Thoughts

  • Examiners want to give you marks—they’re on your side!
  • Mistakes happen—what matters is that you try your best.
  • Most importantly, smile and enjoy the experience.
