Ireland’s membership of the European Union over the last 50 years has seen transformative change across our society. As part of the EU50 programme celebrating this milestone, the Department of Foreign Affairs, the Department of Education and the Royal Irish Academy of Music are partnering on a new initiative: Ár nAmhrán / Our Anthem.
Together we invite you to learn and rehearse our EU Anthem, Beethoven’s Ode to Joy, culminating in live performances of the Anthem on the eve of and on Europe Day, 8-9 May. Schools and other groups are also invited to raise or display the EU flag when the anthem is performed, and a flag will be distributed to each.
Schools, other groups and individuals taking part may wish to share their performances on social media during the month of May, using the hashtag #OurAnthemEU50. A selection of performances will be showcased on the EU50 webpage and on Government social media channels on Europe Day.
